Lisa Simmons began her artistic journey as a dancer, training at the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C. Driven by a deep commitment to her craft, she later moved to London to continue her studies at The Place, London Contemporary Dance School—one of Europe’s leading institutions for contemporary dance. Early in her training, however, an injury altered the trajectory of her path, preventing her from continuing as a performer in the discipline she loved.

Rather than allowing this setback to define her, Lisa embraced it as a turning point. Her search for a new creative outlet eventually led her back to the Washington metropolitan area after many years of living and working in London. There, an unexpected opportunity to work as a production assistant on a film set introduced her to the dynamic and collaborative world of filmmaking. Immersed in the energy of the production process, Lisa discovered a profound passion for visual storytelling. What began as curiosity quickly evolved into purpose, inspiring her to pursue formal training in film and ultimately earn not one, but two degrees in the discipline.

Reflecting on her transition from dancer to filmmaker, Lisa describes her artistic philosophy:
“As a dancer, I was the movement. Now, I capture the movement. Filmmaking allows me to choreograph and direct motion through the lens—and in many ways, I am still dancing, just behind the camera.”

Lisa earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Video before continuing her studies at Howard University, where she completed her Master of Fine Arts in Film in December 2020. Her thesis film, HESS, received widespread recognition and garnered numerous postgraduate accolades. In March 2021, the film was nominated for—and won—the prestigious Paul Robeson Student Award for Best Director and Best Film, affirming her distinctive voice and emerging talent as a filmmaker and director.
